Traditional Tangkhul home Valley and Highlanders house types, Manipur
With your support, we complete one month of our year-long campaign to bring attention to the lesser known built heritage! A sample ‘at-risk’ unprotected site has been posted from each state of India.
Each ethnic community has its own code of house construction. There are a prescribed number of rooms with specific names, fireplace and house deity’s place. A unique construction technique which forms an important architectural feature of a typical Meitei house is non-use of nails or any other metallic substances to secure and fasten the beams and other supports. Vernacular architecture needs to be supported for continuance of the traditional knowledge. Support mechanism must only be developed in collaboration and with approval from the community.
