Shahi Talaab Mohanpur Village, Uttar Pradesh

The lake is in Mohanpur, adjacent to Fatehabad (about 30 km from Agra). Earlier known as Zafarnagar until Aurangzeb renamed it to commemorate the victory over his brother Dara Shikoh in 1658. The Shahi Talaab is built by Aurangzeb in 1659 to symbolize his victory as a part of four other constructions in the vicinity, namely Badshahi Bagh, a sarai, a bridge and Shahi Masjid. The water of the tank is polluted and the area around is derelict.

The fort was built by the Balti craftspeople in the 16th century. The fort stood by the river Indus and was 9 storeys high. Unfortunately, today it stands in ruins as just walls and rubble.

Rajvithi/Rajbid Royal Road, Goa

The Rajvithi was the royal highway built by the Kadamba king, Jaykeshi I, that linked the port of Gopakapattan with the port of Ella (present-day Old Goa), around the 12th – 13th century. The road passes from Old Goa to Velha Goa, passing through Carmambolin, Goalim Moula, Gancim, Batim and Goa Velha villages. This once grand royal highway that was lined by beautiful streetscape today stands neglected with partial modifications.

Radha Bhawan – Bellevue with green Vincent Hill, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand

Built in the year 1871, Radha Bhawan is one of the earliest and largest estates in the area. It was associated with the exile of Afghan Amir Mohammad Yaqub Khan. This once prestigious property is abandoned due to dispute and hence in a state of distress.

‘DEMOLISHED’ Historic Church Molungyimsen, Mokokchung District, Nagaland

The church was established in Molungyimsen near the town Tuli, in the 19th century by the first American Missionary family, Rev. Dr. Edward Winter Clark & Mrs. Mary Mead Clark of Molung Mission Centre, with an intention to spread education in the Naga Hills. The church was in a dilapidated state and recently demolished.

The temple in laterite stone construction is located in a market place in Joypur Block, Bankura District. It is one of the rare structures that is believed to be from the pre-Islamic period. Though it is taken care of by local traders, vegetation growth and neglect put this structure at risk.

A unique example of neoclassical architecture with predominant Gothic attributes. A fire which broke out in the DC Office in November 2015 caused extensive damage to the first floor of the 150 years old building. The components made in wood were destroyed. However, structurally the building is deemed stable. Options of razing the building to the ground and construction of a new building were being deliberated upon. A part of the building has already been demolished to make space for the new DC office.

The historic Krumbeigel Hall in Lalbagh has been demolished. It has been replaced with a new building. Decision-makers need to contemplate about environmental impacts of such moves, in addition to the historic significance. This is especially when the historic fabric could have been conserved rather than demolition debris contributing to the landfills. Modern aesthetics mimicking the historic building is another matter.

Vallam is an archaeological site belonging to the Prehistoric to Modern period (10,000 BCE to 1900 CE). It is a medieval fortified town. It also has early historic materials corresponding to the Sangam age. Most of the site is located on private property. This Mesolithic site has been partially destroyed.
