23rd March is observed as Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs’ Day in India. Today’s H@R post commemorates a historic building that had a role in the freedom struggle. Located in Commissionary Chowk, Lalkurti Bazaar, Meerut, the building is from 1862-1892 CE. Previously was Nawab Rampur’s Khwabgah and thereafter was the Imperial Bank. Shaheed Bhagat Singh resided in one of the rooms. Mahatma Gandhi ended his 231 days-long fast on the campus and planted a Banyan tree. Despite the significance, the structure is neglected and in an advanced state of decay.

This was the main Wada of the Chandrachud family, built by Gangadhar Chandrachud, the Fadnis of Subhedar Malhar Rao Holkar. The Wada was originally one massive structure with a square-shaped plan accommodating courtyards, temples, residential quarters, etc. built over a site of about 3.5 acres. Today, however, several portions of it have collapsed, majorly towards the west. The fortification wall is intact on the eastern side with its lower part made up of Basalt stone and the upper part of Pustaki mud bricks, a typical construction of the Peshwa period. There is also a Samadhi temple of Late Hari Lakshman Chandrachud with a massive Sabha Mandap having elaborate woodwork.

Temple and Shamseer Gazi Mosque Rajbari Village, South District, Tripura

Located on the Eastern bank of the Gomati River, remnants of Shamseer Gazi Mosque as well as a temple in close vicinity are in a state of decay. It dates to Dhanya Manikya or Govinda Manikya period. The mosque was constructed during the first half of the 17th century. The script of the engravings on the walls is likely Bangla/ Sanskrit. The built heritage is in danger of disappearance.

Constructed in 1783, this is the first church built in Bhagalpur. One wall of the cathedral has collapsed. Vegetation has seeped into the masonry. It is abandoned and at threat of further deterioration.

The 250 years old Gurudwara was built by the revered saint, Guru Ghasidas. The historic gurudwara is on the verge of disappearance due to lack of maintenance which has led to evident deterioration and structural distress.

Buroshibtala Temple is one of the oldest temples in Chandannagar, named after the Hindu God Lord Shiva. It is a Panchratna style temple with five pinnacles on the roof. The terracotta structure still showcases its original architectural elements; however, the temple is currently in a dilapidated condition and has structural issues. It is in urgent need of conservation.

Old Municipality Margao, Goa

Built in 1778 CE, the old municipal building also known as ‘Camara Municipal de Salcete’, today lies abandoned and neglected. The locals have been striving to get it restored for over a decade, but the efforts have been in vain. The building is also the site of the Massacre of Margao by the then Portuguese administrator in the year 1890 which took the lives of 23 civilians.
