Chhatar Manzil Palace, Lucknow

bldg 1Located in a central part of Lucknow, the Chhatar Manzil Palace comprises heritage structures that are an amalgam of Nawabi and European style. Sprawled over five acres, the site has two noteworthy monuments, the Chhatar Manzil and the Farhat Baksh. The latter is the oldest structure built in 1781 by General Claude Martin, with new structures added in later years.

These heritage buildings were seriously impacted after the establishment of the Central Drug Research Institute in its premises in 1950. Currently under the protection of the State Archaeology, and in collaboration with INTACH, conservation work has been taken up by the AHD. The abandoned heritage building with its beautiful premises will be converted into a City Museum and Cultural Centre to PD AHD Divay Gupta explaining the restoration process to Shri Badal architectural Heritage Division ( ahd) showcase the famous Awadh Cultural Heritage. A comprehensive documentation and condition assessment has been submitted for final approval.

Initiatives In Daman, Diu And Dadra Nagar Haveli

INTACH has been entrusted with the mapping of the cultural heritage for both Union Territories and three conservation projects in Diu by the Government of the U.T. of Daman and Diu and Dadra Nagar Haveli (DNH).

Under the domain of Portuguese until 1954 (DNH) and 1961 (Daman and Diu), their influence can still be recognized in the traditions, religion, architecture, cuisine, etc. A comprehensive cultural mapping is been carried out by all four divisions of INTACH. To date, about 60 buildings have been identified in DNH and 400 in Daman.

Two projects for conservation and adaptive re-use in Diu which are believed to have been built in the mid-16th century by Portuguese are:

  • The Saint Francis Assisi’s Church and Convent,
  • The Saint Thomas Church,
  • The sea fortress Panikotha, for which detailed project reports (DPRs) have been submitted.

The Fortress of Panikotha was built before the Portuguese entered Diu. The Portuguese got the domain of the fortress on the 25th October 1535, in celebration of the treaty of Peace and Friendship between the Portuguese and the Bahadur Shah.

Saint Andrews Church – Igreja De Santo André Church In Vanakbaraarea- Diu – Union Territory Of Daman And Diu

Located on the western part of the Diu in a small settlement known as Vanakbara, the Saint Andrews Church is facing a serious threat from development by locals, demolition of buttresses and other structural elements leading to insatiability of the structure. Immediate action for the conservation and structural restoration along with complete stoppage on pilfer aging the building materials by locals should be taken, else the building will collapse in very near future resulting in loss of heritage.
