The most prevalent issues regarding heritage assets in Agra are lack of heritage awareness amongst the owners, community, pilgrims and tourists, tourism pressure during peak seasons as well as pressures imposed by the rising need for accommodation, market and infrastructure.

The property shows signs of deterioration and may fall prey to urbanisation and market pressures. The beautiful Sheesh Mahal is in a dilapidated condition and at risk of collapsing. This is a case example to visualise how the absence of these familiar landmarks can rid a town of its character.

The complex is a repository and excellent educational resource for building construction methodology from the era, although the built heritage is in varying stages of decay and collapse. It is in danger of disappearance, as the historic buildings are at risk of collapse from the existing structural cracks and issues. The domes of two structures have collapsed. The plaster layer of one of the structures is missing, exposing the masonry underneath. INTACH has done architectural and video documentation of the historic structures.

It is located at Ravi Bhawan at Jaistambh Chowk. The Darwaza was built in 1877 to commemorate the presence of the Prince of Wales at Delhi Darbar where Queen Victoria was honoured with the title of Empress of India, meaning Kesar-e-Hind. Initially, it was built as an entrance passage to the city by collective funding of Rs. 4,800 by the then rich and honourable people of Raipur.

Ravi Bhawan, the commercial complex, has engulfed the Darwaza, and two chhatris in the west have been merged with the building. The cupola over the northeast chhatri has been destroyed completely. The roof is used as a dumping ground by shop owners and construction workers. Posters pasted on the walls also deteriorate the aesthetic appeal..

The palace of the Maji family was constructed around 1864-1905 CE and located in Kharar, Ghatal I Block. The complex comprises of the residential quarter, temples and dalan for Durga Puja. These are significant for their high artistic quality such as intricate details in stucco work, wooden doors, high Pancha Ratna temple and a group of other temples. Even minimum maintenance is beyond the capacity of the present members of the erstwhile landlord family; however, the owners keep the structures in use and take care of everyday rituals of worship in the temples. The buildings are in a state of deterioration and the residential part has partially collapsed. The ornamentation and stucco work of the temples are almost intact. But uncertainty and the fear of collapse are constant risks.

Built in 1803 CE by William Fraser, it was once the residence of the former British Commissioner of India (and was first appointed as the deputy resident of Delhi). It is located behind St. James Church in Old Delhi. It was constructed over the Mughal Palace which belonged to Ali Mardan Khan, an engineer in Shahjahan’s court. The building was converted into the office and administrative headquarters of the Chief Engineer of the Northern Railways for construction works. Most of the historic character of the building is lost today, due to additions and alterations. The basement cellars or tykhanas are especially in precarious condition.

Gobind Bhawan was built in the year 1806 CE as a residence (haveli/ bhawan). It was an impressive mansion, with decorative features such as elegant stone statues, fountains, Dutch and German ceramic tiles and European furniture. Today, the structure is partially in ruins and partially used as an RTO office, with many original features of the building still intact. It has a royal Darbar Hall and chambers decorated with tile and glass works. The building shows signs of deterioration, structural instability and is in an advanced state of decay.

Poddar Chhatri Complex Ramgarh, Sikar District, Rajasthan

The Ram Gopal Poddar Chhatri Complex was constructed in the late 1800s. It has a total of six structures, including four chhatris, each with a Shiv Mandir, dedicated to the Poddar ancestors, a baradari and a Jagannath Mandir. The structures have intricate traditional wall paintings depicting various scenes from legends. The complex is maintained by the Poddar family and their priest (caretaker) and is not open to the public.

The chhatris are exposed to damage by issues like weathering, rising dampness and structural movement. In several sections, the wall paintings are fading and the architectural elements such as the finials and chhajjas have been damaged. The repairs have been done using cement which may eventually cause more damage and loss of decorative elements. The chhatri complex requires detailed conservation work to prevent further damage and loss of decorative details.

Built in the year 1898 CE, Narsing Girji was one of the largest and most important mills of Solapur. The mill was spread over an area of 33 acres and comprised of various structures including office spaces, godowns, residential quarters, guest houses, wells, etc. Despite being a mill building, it showcases various architectural features of the era such as stained-glass windows, arches, wooden trusses, stone carvings, etc. Today, however, the buildings show signs of deterioration and are at risk of demolition. The complex is in urgent need of preservation.

Today, the structure is in a state of disrepair and shows signs of deterioration. Traditional houses in Leh Old Town Ladakh

Traditionally constructed in mud, the houses of Leh Old Town showcase a unique example of vernacular architecture suitable for high-altitude. Built around 400 years ago, a large number of houses here lie vacant as the majority of the population has moved to lower terrains into new concrete houses. The Awas Yojna Scheme by the government aimed to bring down the entire old area and build new concrete houses, which encourages demolition/ replacement of climatically suitable traditional houses.

Government schemes, along with promoting better living conditions should also focus on the revival of traditional materials and building practices that have been time-tested through generations. The suitability of the construction material with the geo-climatic zone is often not considered while reconstructing standardised modern houses under these schemes. Such schemes cause severe threats to heritage and need a serious review so as to safeguard cultural resources. Traditional communities have to cope with the new dimension of issues confronted due to climatic changes. This challenge is intensified by man-made threats and globalization.

Largely destroyed by the 1905 earthquake, the Bazaar was rebuilt using wooden, cross-braced framed structures, with light infill walls, largely single-storeyed, with sloping corrugated GI or wooden planks/shingle roofs. It is therefore essential to conserve or adaptively reuse the few resilient examples that are still surviving.

One of the most urgent challenges is the ongoing, largely unauthorized, construction of large-scale, multistorey, poorly engineered, hazardous buildings that is rampant in all sections of this Hill Station located in Seismic Zone V, constituting a threat to the lives of residents and visitors as well being detrimental in terms of environmental quality. This situation is particularly serious in relation to the various heritage areas provided for in the notified Development Plan for Dharamshala. Most of the surviving unprotected heritage resources of Forsytheganj, McLeodganj and Upper Dharamshala are at risk of demolition and replacement by new construction.

One of the 36 garhs (or forts) of Chhattisgarh, this fort was associated with the Pendagarh Zamindars and also belonged to the zamindari of Ratanpur. Mentioned in journey details of British Captain Blunt in 1795 as a beautiful fort on a scenic hill. The first owners of the fort were the Rajgaud, whose status was that of a Dewan. In Samwat 1699, Kalyan Singh, the son of the zamindar of Uproda Himatrai, conquered the fort. The fort is presently in a completely dilapidated and ruinous condition, and the site needs immediate preservation.

Solah Rahi was built in the year 1840 CE by Rao Rudr Singh as a stepped tank for serving water to the community. It is named after the sixteen flights of steps in total, located on all its sides. The tank has symmetrical steps on three sides and a ramp (for cattle) on one side. Constructed in slate, the structure showcases a vernacular hybrid form of jhalar-type stepped pond. The facades are marked with tibari i.e., triple-arched opening (as seen in the image). An old Shiva Temple is located on its banks along with two drinking water wells. The original space has been encroached upon and the structure is in a dilapidated condition. It is likely to be lost due to ownership disputes.

Home to the Tulja Bhavani Temple, Tuljapur is one of the pilgrim destinations of Maharashtra, located about 40km north of Solapur. Stepwells were an outcome of the ancient ingenious water storage techniques, but today, they lie in a state of neglect and are even used as dump yards in certain places. Fortunately, initiatives like the Maharashtra Stepwells are helping document and revive the step-wells across the state, with the participation of local people.

Built in 1892 CE, and currently known as Gandhi Bhawan, the building was once also called Victoria Town Hall, as it was built to commemorate the jubilee year of Queen Victoria’s reign. The colonial structure showcases features such as recessed arches, decorative cornices, twin windows, decorative parapets as well as a clock tower. It is presently used as the district library. The building lacks proper maintenance and shows signs of decay and structural cracks in the roof, but fortunately, its original form is still intact. Excessive water seepage is accelerating the deterioration of the materials. Periodic maintenance and sensitive repairs can be carried out to save it from a fatal future.

The bunkers were built between 1939 to 1945 CE by the Japanese army when they invaded and occupied the islands during World War II. There are numerous bunkers scattered across the island, mainly South Andaman, out of which 75 could be accessed and were a part of the INTACH Listing. These bunkers are made up of concrete masonry and show issues such as vegetation growth, dampness, and deterioration due to negligence by authorities. They are one of the major tourist destinations in Andaman today, yet many are not well kept, and numerous lie in an advanced state of decay.

The fort was built in the 17th century CE along the banks of the river Mahanadi. Today, the Raja Bakhri and Rani Mahal are the only remains of the fort. In 2015, with the initiative of INTACH Sambalpur Chapter and the local community, most of the vegetation was cleared, which helped in accessing the site and documentation by AH INTACH.

The mausoleum was built during the 17th century, in memory of Nawab Jahangir Khan, by his wife. It consists of a big dome structure under which the nawab rests, surrounded by four minarets. The structure was constructed in lakhauri bricks. The minarets are three-storey high each, consisting of a staircase leading to the top. The structure is slowly crumbling due to neglect. The dome has fallen, but the minarets still stand tall at 50 feet from each other.

Standing tall in the historic urban fabric of Mehrauli, this public building has an imposing pediment. The entrance porch is supported by circular columns with a sloping roof. Constructed in 1942, it has been used as a residence, MCD House, Tax Office and Vocational Training Centre. The building has distinct decorative features such as terracotta jalis as ventilators on both levels and decorative iron grills on the first floor. The building has immense potential for reuse, also owing to its location. However, the dilapidating building faces a huge risk due to encroachment and incompatible alterations.

The school was established in 1832 and is one of the oldest heritage structures showcasing the use of teakwood and exposed brickwork in a load-bearing construction. However, the building has been deteriorating over the years due to the lack of maintenance and the Nisarga cyclone. The building faces a major threat of demolition and thereby erasure of its history.

Gulab Sagar is a manmade reservoir built in the late eighteenth century by Gulab Rai, Maharaja Vijay Singh’s concubine. The reservoir is a rectangular twin-tank measuring around 150 x 90 metres, surrounded by a complex of palaces, temples, and wells. It consists of two tanks, one large and one small, separated by a walkway running in between. It took 8 years to construct the reservoir, in which water from Balsamand Lake was transported to the reservoir via canals. Over the years, Gulab Sagar’s original architectural features have been lost due to lack of maintenance, encroachments, and negligence.

It is located on the ancient route from Kausambi to Puri. Malhar was one of the most important centres of art from the 2nd Century BCE. The village showcases significant archaeological remains. These unprotected remains from the debris of historical sites are used in private homes, displayed in streets, courtyards and in the construction of new buildings (such as in plinths and boundary walls). Sculptures are used as private temples and pooja areas such as the Tulsi base and courtyard temples. Few of the stone sculptures are displayed in the niches of external walls.

The traditional water harvesting structure was built by the Maratha rulers in the 18th century. It is surrounded by religious structures and a stepwell. It lies dilapidated and partially collapsed. It has been facing vandalism and indifference and is used as a garbage dump yard. The water tank too is in a neglected state with dense algae growth. On being brought to the attention by a concerned local community person, INTACH prepared an assessment report for its conservation and cleaning. Active support is required from the local administration and community to carry it forward.

The 12-acre Patna Collectorate complex on the banks of the River Ganga comprises structures from the 18th and 19th centuries. Some of the buildings slated for demolition are the last surviving examples showcasing Dutch architecture in Patna. One of the buildings has been functioning as the Patna Collectorate since 1857, before which it housed the Court of Appeal and a saltpetre godown. The Court recently approved the demolition of the heritage buildings in the complex; paving the way for a new collectorate, as the local authorities declared them unsafe with no heritage value, completely overlooking their rich significance to the local and national history.

The lake is in Mohanpur, adjacent to Fatehabad (about 30 km from Agra). Earlier known as Zafarnagar until Aurangzeb renamed it to commemorate the victory over his brother Dara Shikoh in 1658. The Shahi Talaab is built by Aurangzeb in 1659 to symbolize his victory as a part of four other constructions in the vicinity, namely Badshahi Bagh, a sarai, a bridge and Shahi Masjid. The water of the tank is polluted and the area around is derelict.

A part of the building has already been demolished to make space for the new DC office.

Built over 60 years ago, the houses of the traditional saree weavers are exemplary of dual-purpose vernacular architecture located in community clusters. They are famous for the handloom Ikat sarees. These clusters are critical in keeping the ancient craft of handloom weaving alive, yet they face a major threat of deterioration.

Iconic saree weaving clusters in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Assam are on UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. However, with the pressures of urbanisation, there is a risk of disappearance. INTACH had conducted a study to identify clusters of vernacular houses of saree weavers in Telangana.

Located in Commissionary Chowk, Lalkurti Bazaar, Meerut, the building is from 1862-1892 CE. Previously was Nawab Rampur’s Khwabgah and thereafter was the Imperial Bank. Shaheed Bhagat Singh resided in one of the rooms. Mahatma Gandhi ended his 231 days-long fast on the campus and planted a Banyan tree. Despite the significance, the structure is neglected and in an advanced state of decay.

This was the main Wada of the Chandrachud family, built by Gangadhar Chandrachud, the Fadnis of Subhedar Malhar Rao Holkar. The Wada was originally one massive structure with a square-shaped plan accommodating courtyards, temples, residential quarters, etc. built over a site of about 3.5 acres. Today, however, several portions of it have collapsed, majorly towards the west. The fortification wall is intact on the eastern side with its lower part made up of Basalt stone and the upper part of Pustaki mud bricks, a typical construction of the Peshwa period. There is also a Samadhi temple of Late Hari Lakshman Chandrachud with a massive Sabha Mandap having elaborate woodwork.

The palace and surrounding 25 acres were purchased by Swami Athuradas after Independence. Now it is owned by an IT company based in Bengaluru. The palace has been the location for many film shoots but is now in a decrepit state.

The Gondwana region has unique characteristics such as natural resources like the Narmada River, Satpura Range and National Park, along with the tribal communities and built heritage of the Kalchuri and Gond periods, that make it distinct.

‘Rinchen Surgay’ planned house i.e. eight-sided architecture and a domed meditation centre. Constructed in 18th-19th century CE. The huge kothi is now not in use and the residents built a new house in RCC nearby. This excellent example of aristocratic Sikkimese architecture is in an advanced stage of decay. It is extremely important that the locals are made aware of the indigenous resources which they have and encouraged to use traditional materials and techniques. The Cultural Affairs and Heritage Department should be the forerunner in this cause.

Chandrapur, founded by the Gond King Khandakya Ballal Shah in the 13th century, has several archaeological remains in rural areas, many of which are still unexplored. Chandrapur has a few unique typologies such as stone workshops and gravestones of Gond kings. The historic workshop for stone carvers was situated atop a mountain, the rocks from which were used for sculpting. It has several remains of old carved pieces of stone. It is in an advanced state of decay and exposed to weathering. The rural heritage of Chandrapur has high potential to be developed for rural and regional tourism.

The 200 years old temple is constructed in bricks and lime, and has significant stucco work and paintings. Uninformed urban/ rural planning and development is detrimental as it does not keep heritage in view while planning large-scale development projects. Such is the insensitivity that a dam is proposed at Icha across Subarnerekha River, due to which Raghunath Mandir is at threat of being completely submerged in its reservoir. The project was strongly opposed by the local tribal community of Saranda Forest in West Singhbhum District.

The early 20th century CE haveli is in an abandoned state. Majority of the historic buildings that have been demolished or reconstructed in the last decades, have been residential. After liberation in 1961 CE, most of the Portuguese (and Parsis) left the city, leaving behind their mansions and havelis. These were either taken by the government or were sold at cheap rates to the public. These havelis went into the hands of people some of who insensitively renovated them with no knowledge of conservation, due to lack of awareness about the unique architectural heritage.

The lake is located behind Vatva Gram Panchayat Office, Ahmedabad. It is a historic, manmade lake structure. It has damaged surfaces and is in a poor condition.
A national policy framework needs to be formed for historic water structures and systems. Conservation techniques, including regeneration of the water system wherever possible, need to be formulated. Ideally, the Ministry of Environment should set up a central body to implement and monitor conservation actions under guidelines and there may be special provision of financial support. Private bodies may be encouraged to take up responsibilities. State governments must be mandated to undertake revival of historic water structures through municipal authorities for addressing current challenges of water deficit.

The historical library is situated in Satti Bazaar, Near Kankali Para and Kankali Talab, Raipur. It is the oldest library in Raipur District, established in 1908. Mahatma Gandhi visited and addressed a large gathering of ladies in the ground adjacent to this building in 1920. The maintenance of the building needs to be appropriately undertaken. There was loss of prominence of the decorative features due to insensitive limewash. Dampness had resulted in withered plaster. Raipur Nagar Nigam has renovated the building recently.

Located in Cheyyur Taluk, Kanchipuram District, the temple is from the late Pallava or early Chola period (8th-9th century CE). The main temple with Dravidian Shikhara is dedicated to Shiva and is a rare specimen of a brick-built Gajaprishta temple. The site has archaeological and historical features, sculptures and relief panels. Wide structural cracks run from top to bottom on the rear side of the Shikhara, side walls of the hall and junction. It is in a highly neglected state and vulnerable to collapse if urgent action is not taken. In addition to the temple, the village and its environs possess a network of manmade irrigation canals and cisterns or reservoirs.

Located in Hatt ka Pura, Chanderi. The dual-purpose vernacular architecture in traditional community clusters, is an extremely critical aspect of keeping alive the ancient craft of handloom weaving. They are home to the world-renowned GI-tagged Chanderi sarees. The artisanal workshops-cum-homes are at risk of disappearance due to pressures of urbanization, lack of awareness about climate-responsiveness and project proposals that disregard the link of the home-based occupation.

Chanderi is part of ‘Iconic Sari Weaving Clusters of India’ which is on UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage Sites. INTACH’s pilot initiative for traditional material repair, upgradation and conservation is a useful sample for future works of departments and agencies and for preparing proposals under relevant schemes. A consultative approach was followed with the community (owners and local masons).

Situated in Batadu Village, about 40 km from Barmer railway station. The well was the main source of water for a dozen surrounding villages of the desert region, especially in the drought of 1947. It was constructed by Rawal Gulab Singh with sangmarmar white marble. It has marble relief work and shloks carved on its walls and a main statue of Garuda on the platform. It is now in a poor condition and collects garbage, however has potential to be cleaned and revived.

Located about 500 metres from SH-64 in Papaur village, Kushinagar district. Kushinagar is believed to be the place where Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana. Papaur is a significant site associated with Buddha. However, the site is in danger of disappearance and unsympathetic alterations by Buddhist societies. Buddhist sites are scattered in various villages near Kushinagar and have poor approach roads. Developing such sites with insensitive interventions undermines the authenticity of the place (also by district administrations). Despite the archaeologically rich area, new construction is coming up in the vicinity of ASI-protected sites too.

Immediate guidance is required for conservation and site development. Heritage impact assessments must be conducted before approvals are given for any new development in areas with potential archaeological heritage remains.

Historic buildings in Jaijon Village Hoshiarpur, Punjab

Set within the Shivaliks, the village of Jaijon commands a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. Historically the village held a very important position by virtue of the presence of a railway line and also being the major collection point of cloth material like khadi, and eatables from the surrounding region. It had a rich painting tradition evident in the exquisitely painted facades of the houses. The shift in trade routes and railway networks after independence led to the migration of businesses and local craftspeople and resulted in the subsequent degeneration of the village. The khadi and wall painting tradition in the village is almost extinct. Historic houses lie abandoned, in a serious state of deterioration or have collapsed. Much of it has been replaced with newly constructed houses. INTACH conducted a study of the historic village in 2002.

Situated about 70 km west of Solapur. The significant statue of Lord Brahma dates from 11th – 12th century CE. It is placed in a niche in the wall of a temple tank at Mangalvedha. Water seepage in the adjoining ground has caused the tank wall to dilapidate. This makes the idol vulnerable to being detached and fall into the tank. Not only will the ancient statue be damaged, it will also be very difficult to recover it. Proactive steps are required to save the tangible remains.

Awareness of one’s heritage must be compulsorily included in the education system and curriculum; only then there is the hope of sensitizing future citizens. This domain has an important cause and effect towards people’s perception of heritage. And is the key to addressing apathy, vandalism, neglect and insensitivity towards heritage.

Located at Gandhi Road, Dehradun. A Central Forest School was established at Dehradun in 19th century. Heritage management plans are required for optimal utilisation of complexes such as the historic Ranger’s College complex, governmental institutional complexes and offices, and religious landmark buildings with technical guidelines for conservation and retrofitting.

Ulsoor neighbourhood consists of private structures, maintained by the families since 1900s. Financial support is required for taking up alterations, along with keeping the historic character. If restored and planned considering the needs of the families while balancing the character, the initiative can become a model for many such houses. Several positive steps have been taken by INTACH Bengaluru Chapter related to listing and built heritage, and spreading awareness thereof. In 2014, a comprehensive listing was completed of Ulsoor neighbourhood. Following this, an exhibition was held at a Metro station and a main boulevard of the city, highlighting the unique architecture, history and culture of this area.

The Old Post Office is located opposite Surguja University and is about a kilometre away from the bus stand, Babupara, Ambikapur. The 1902 CE building is in an advanced state of decay. The roof is completely dilapidated and is at risk of collapse. The lack of awareness amongst local body officials leads to the decay of such buildings. Many historic civic buildings that have been lying unused or abandoned, have the potential to be used for public purposes. Conservation standards and norms should be ensured for repair, maintenance and conservation of the civic built heritage (measures must be initiated such as pilot projects executed incompatible/ traditional materials).

Built in the 16th century. Baoli Kuan seems to be the only well in the district which has ornamentation. The structure is presently not in use and is in an advanced stage of structural decay. Conservation and site-sensitive development can be linked to the more visited, 16th-century Sabalpur Vishnu temple which was built by Raja Man Singh’s mother.

The temples, remains and settlement of Haat Village (Zila Chamoli) are very significant due to their archaeological and historical value (9-10th century CE). They also hold immense importance because of the sacred value and association with Adi Shankaracharya who established the sacred place. These sites are under serious threat of disappearance owing to the ongoing Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Power project. Lakshmi Narayan Temple is one of the sites in the village, that are assets of national importance. Assigned as ‘muck dumping sites’ of the power project renders these at serious risk of permanent loss.

Vairag Lake Ghat and Vairag Tank are located about 30 km northwest of Solapur. The 18th century CE structures are fast deteriorating. Water seepage on the sides of the tank is causing the walls to crack. Structures associated with water have been an integral part of architecture in India. These were ingeniously conceived, magnificent structures used for accumulating, preserving and regulating groundwater with special technical know-how. Yet they are largely in a poor state in present times.

Located in Kondaveedu village, Chilakaluripet constituency of Guntur District. It is a hill fortress located 1,700 feet above m.s.l. Ruled by the Reddy dynasty between 1328 and 1428 and then taken over by Gajpathis of Orissa, later ravaged by the rulers of the Bahmani kingdom (1458). The Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadevaraya captured it in 1516. The Golconda Sultan Quli Qutb Shah finally captured it in 1579, renaming it Murtuzanagar. The fort came under the control of the French colonists in 1752 when it was extensively fortified. It passed on to the English imperialists in 1788, who abandoned it in early 19th century in favour of Guntur. Urbanization and abandonment of the area are the major threats. Now, the massive fortifications and battlements are seen in ruins only. The interior has extensive ruins. A large number of historic buildings are vulnerable to developmental pressures.

This traditional weaver home is over 80 years old and is one of the places famous for handloom Ikat sarees. The dual-purpose vernacular architecture, located in traditional community clusters, is an extremely critical aspect of keeping alive the ancient craft of handloom weaving. Such vernacular homes are in a state of deterioration. Iconic saree weaving clusters in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Assam are on UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. However, with pressures of urbanisation, there is a risk of disappearance. INTACH had conducted a study to identify clusters of vernacular houses of saree weavers in Telangana.

Located in the premises of the College of Teacher Education in Varanasi Cantonment. This is one of the significant halts of Swami Vivekanand, from the 19th century. The building is in ruins and in danger of disappearance. Wild vegetation growing in and around the building has caused structural and material damage. Gopal Lal Villa is place of associational significance. As narrated in Swami Vivekanand’s various letters, this place had a soothing atmosphere with a rose garden and large trees. Set amidst the garden, was the well-furnished house with many rooms and parlours. He also found the atmosphere of the place conducive to scholarly musings.

The temple is facing deterioration and along with its surroundings, it is in a poor condition.

The vernacular residential settlement is located on either side of the road that separates Assam and Arunachal Pradesh (Bordumsa-Mahadevpur route). Traditional building materials and techniques have been used for generations, such as tuku patta for the roof, timber and bamboo construction, and mud facades. The settlement is under threat of urbanisation and replacement of traditional materials (that have been conducive for the climate and sourced locally).

A unique, historic water supply system for public utility and one of the glorious relics of Mughal engineering skills. Malik Amber, Commander of the Nizam Shahi Kings and Subedar of Daulatabad, discovered and introduced underground water channel/ tunnel system in 1617 CE. The system utilised subterranean water table of mountainous elevated valleys, such that the water flowed down towards the town by gravity. This is a valuable educational resource too. Presently, only a small portion of the intricate network is barely functioning and supplying water to the old city. This is due to lack of maintenance by the authorities as well as apathy and misuse by the citizens, leading to arteries and underground channels blocked or demolished during construction activities. Under threat from the developing town as well as unauthorized pumping of water. Surviving segments need urgent attention and remedies. Maintenance and revitalization of the well-organised nahar system needs to be undertaken. INTACH Aurangabad Chapter has taken initiative in pursuing the matter.

The old tower-type temple dedicated to Lord Shiva has remnants of historic walls around it, indicating the existence of an entire temple complex with ancillary structures in it. The temple and the ancillary structures are in a dilapidated state, with garbage lying around the site. Access to the complex is through a narrow lane and garbage-filled drain. Built in late 18th century, the main shrine is located on the second floor, while other activities are carried out in the lower floors. The attic can be accessed only by the temple priest and is used to store important ingredients for yajnas. In general, the architectural character of modern structures lining the streets of Nirmand is different from that of vernacular structures.

Phool Bagh is a 17th century CE garden of the Rajput period, which was used by royal ladies. It is in a neglected condition. Lack of awareness of historic gardens as heritage is one of the prime reasons for their neglected state. This also implies that interventions are made which almost always lead to a further loss in their authenticity. Maintenance regimes specific to retaining the historicity of the sites are generally missing. It is important that the communities who engage with a historic garden connect with the site in all possible ways (including in any management plan) so that its significance and associated values are kept intact.

1828 CE. Though the main palace is ASI-protected, some structures of Alwar Fort are unprotected. The haveli is situated opposite the main palace building and it opens up into the forest. The fort was previously used to mark the state boundary for surveillance and this haveli was a rest house for the main palace guard. In the recent past, the palace was used by the police as their main wireless post but this haveli is unused. Haveli shows signs of damage and decay, and some portions are at risk of collapse.

The Madarsa is located in Baijnathpara in Raipur. It dates to 1924 CE. The building is facing deterioration and shows signs of structural threats. Algae growth and dampness are also visible. There are hardly any direct incentives available for conservation. In general for built heritage, the expectation of preservation, maintenance and financial resources is from government departments. An array of financial incentives must be devised for owners, exploring opportunities for practical, creative solutions and linkages. Linkages are definitely possible with schemes of various sectors for incentivising conservation of historic properties.

Farukkhabad emerged as an important town in the 18th century in northern India. It became a great centre of commerce and trade. The Bangash Nawabs encouraged merchants and bankers to come and settle in Farrukhabad. The ghats consist of a cluster of highly dilapidated structures, gateways, pavilions and garden complexes. The water has receded completely. Unprotected built heritage of such significance requires proactive steps by authorities before they are lost permanently.

Location: Telia Mill, Prem Darwaja, Ahmedabad. The mill is from 1889 and was an industrial building during Revival of Ahmedabad. It is severely threatened and partially collapsed. Such erstwhile mill buildings are remnants of an industrial economy that lived their age of optimum production, and have outlived their utility. They present an opportunity for repurposing their use to address the current requirements of the neighbourhoods they are located in. Adaptive reuse not only provides creative prospects for design, but also responds positively to the environmental challenges posed by demolition and new construction.

Not many are aware of the existence of Sewri fort at Mumbai, which dates from about 1680 CE. Since it is a desolate area, it is vulnerable to anti-social elements. Located near the Sewri railway station, the fort cannot be easily spotted by passersby, owing to concrete buildings obstructing the view from the road. Signage is lacking. Sewri Fort premises are in a state of deterioration and neglect.

Chokhani Johra is situated in Mandawa in Jhunjhunu District. It dates from 1845 CE. The historic water structure shows signs of deterioration. Sikar and Jhunjhunu districts of Rajasthan are dotted with step-wells, however, in the past decade the water table has drastically depleted and most of them are defunct today. INTACH undertook identification and mapping of traditional water structures of Rajasthan in 2015.

This built heritage is managed and owned by extended joint family but lack of financial means and technical input are putting the structures at risk. Old mansions are in ruins. Such historic buildings under private ownership face challenges of finance and technical expertise, which are the major factors for the present status of conservation.

Many government departments and authorities own heritage structures but lack expertise in maintenance and a scientific approach to conservation of their built heritage. By increasing their capacities and awareness, a large part of the historic building stock would be preserved through appropriate maintenance, repair and in cases, conservation where needed.

Origin of this unprotected structure likely dates to the 15th century CE. It was modified as a hospital in the 18th century during the reign of the Scindias. The structure has been declared unfit for use by the Public Works Department and lying derelict for the last few years. However, it needs to be re-examined and retrofitted for appropriate reuse. Despite many plans being developed for Chanderi over the years, the lack of implementation on recommendations has resulted in the present condition of the historic buildings. There is a disconnect between planning and execution authorities, coupled with absence of public participation.

Row of houses and shops with Deco-style influence can be seen in Basti Harphool Singh, Sadar Bazaar. These buildings are in a state of decay, lacking maintenance and repair. In the usual narrative of Delhi’s development, the buildings of the 20th century in the style of Deco are either forgotten or marginalized, and many if not most of these structures are fast dilapidating, being altered and torn down. The residences of 1920s-1950s need to be classified and categorized according to their designs and other criteria and need to be contextualized within the description of 20th century architecture in India. Examples of such neighbourhoods need to be preserved and promoted as representations of a particular era of modernity and modern Indian architectural evolution.

Numerous historic residential buildings are still present in Diu, such as this residence at Saurakhiya Street. It was constructed in 1910 CE. The exteriors are ornate; however, they are in a state of decay. Owing to lack of awareness of the historical value, the interiors of many such residences have insensitive additions and alterations. Plaster and paint have also spalled off in this case. Heritage structures can be preserved with the willingness of owners and users by providing sufficient technical and financial incentives to retain their unique heritage. INTACH had undertaken an Integrated heritage development plan for Diu in 2015.

Vernacular architecture that has developed and refined over generations is at threat due to wide-scale infrastructure development in the region, which is not sensitive to natural and built heritage.

The walls are about 4 feet in thickness and the fortress is constructed of bricks with mud and lime mortar. Similarly, the royal grain storage, the dilapidated bhandarghar, is awaiting its eventual collapse.

This leads to either structural distress or their use as garbage dumps. This common narrative of historic water structures can be turned around as an opportunity for revival and water harvesting since water is a valuable, depleting resource.

It was damaged in the 2011 earthquake and the entire rear side was destroyed. The small square shaped, double storey Gompa measures 8m x 8m. The entrance is through a plain vestibule supported on 2 timber columns with carved capitals. The lower floor is built of stone, laid in mud masonry and upper floor in timber.

In rural areas and semi-urban areas of Solapur district, such built heritage is getting ruined owing to disuse and negligence. Public awareness along with stringent laws, with the provision of incentives and penalties, will go a long way in achieving safeguards for built heritage.

In Mussoorie, some of the earliest boarding schools were established in the 1840s, and by 1884, Mussoorie was known as the ‘Edinburgh of the East’, an educational centre. Within the historic core, Church of North India Boys’ Inter College School complex is a large area with one of the few, invaluable open spaces within this dense area. Sections of the historic main building are highly dilapidated, and some rooms, including the main hall at first floor level, have been closed as they are considered to be in danger of collapse. Major water ingress from roof is affecting the structure. Tie-rods provided earlier have proved ineffective. Immediate structural assessment and action for structural stabilisation, consolidation, retrofitting and upgradation is required. Heritage management plans are required for optimal utilisation of complexes such as this.

Mubarakpur and Varanasi have been known for the production of Banarasi sarees since the Mughal era. Both boast of fine weaving skills but no attention is given to the living-cum-work spaces producing the finest pieces. The dual-purpose vernacular architecture, located in traditional community clusters, is an extremely critical aspect of keeping alive the ancient craft of hand loom weaving. They are in a state of deterioration. With pressures of urbanisation, there is a risk of disappearance of the built heritage typology. The main reason behind the changes in built material is lack of awareness among the users and authorities about the benefits of traditional houses. INTACH has been making efforts since 2015, to study the vernacular houses of saree weaving clusters in India, especially the clusters that are on UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites, in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Assam.

Located in Pingla Block, Paschim Medinipur District. Inscriptions on walls indicate that it was founded by Anadapal Chowdhuri in 1857 and the chief mason was Haridas Mistry of Daspur. An unusual structure with decorative features – combination of European, Late medieval, Mughal and Orissa influence. Such built heritage requires incentives like setting up of a repair fund, access to grants, tax exemptions etc for private owners. Has noteworthy stucco work and terracotta decorations. Features include flat-roofed chandni structure, multifoil arches, European classical columns with Bangla type curved cornice on first floor, pancharatna ridged towers and finials on top. The structure is in an advanced state of decay as it is abandoned, not maintained. Cracks, dampness, vegetation growth are serious threats. Sadananda Shiva Temple and Rashmancha are in the same complex.

Senakapat village is a settlement south of Sirpur. It was relocated here about 30 years ago from near Raikhera tank, due to the frequent flooding of River Mahanadi. Although a typical Chhattisgarhi village, Senakapat is unique by virtue of its current location. Remains and findings indicate that the location was once part of the entrance to the ancient city of ‘Sripura’, the capital of Daksin Kosala. The settlement is over the archaeological remains. There is a Senakapat tank and Shiv temple near the village. The remains of Senakapat Dwara rest over the temple. Any new developments need to be sensitive to the significant archaeology of the place. INTACH had prepared a Tourism Development Plan for Sirpur in 2009.

The structure is located on Sadarpur main road, Sector 45, Noida (in National Capital Region). It is likely from late Mughal period. Mainly the dome survives of the crumbling structure. It is in danger of disappearance. There is lack of value for such significant remains of our heritage, and therefore they face the prevalent condition of decay. Encroachments and unauthorized construction around heritage premises are a direct result of the fact that no significance is attached to them by the stakeholders. Such notions stem from the general indifference and insensitivity towards heritage because neither our education system nor our society stresses on its importance and relevance.

19th to 20th century CE. Houses rare records of the ancient Mooppil Nair family, the legendary landlords who owned the palace and land under Valluvanad and erstwhile Cochin state. It was brought to attention in an article in ‘The Hindu’ in 2015. It once stood for royalty and grandeur but is now in an advanced state of decay. There is excessive vegetation growth in the eight-acre premises. The rare documents that throw light on the administration of the erstwhile Swaroopams and medieval history of Kerala are also in a state of neglect. The palace involved litigations. Though main buildings have been auctioned in mid-80s and the contractors have removed them, some structures like an Oottupura and Maalika Chuvadu still remain, evoking a unique old world charm despite the ruin.

It is deteriorating; however, this large span structure is suitable for adaptive reuse. Capacity building for conservation, retrofitting, adaptive reuse and preventive maintenance is required. Heritage management plans for optimal utilisation of the heritage resources of recreational and institutional complexes, as well as initiatives for traffic calming and management, are necessary. Within the historic hill station of Dalhousie, zone-specific approaches are required for integration of heritage resource conservation into the Development Plan.

In the Ujani Dam on Bheema river (at the border of Pune and Solapur districts), a Gadhi at Kugav has been submerged. It is a fortress-like residential structure from 18th-19th century CE. In the nearby village Palasdev, a Chalukyan temple belonging to 11th-12th century CE has submerged. The shikhara shows marks of various levels of water. These structures are revealed seasonally and INTACH Solapur Chapter has been following up consistently to bring the cases to attention of the authorities. However, urban pressures result in development of infrastructure and services that are often inconsiderate to built heritage.

The fort was completed in 1855 CE. Other than the main intent of construction as a fort structure, it was also used to store grains collected from the farmers as revenue. These traditional residential buildings date back to old generations of business families from the area and today have multiple owners settled in different parts of the country. Thus neither outright takeover for maintenance of the best places is possible nor are the residents bound by any law to restore and preserve these old edifices.

These form part of the 15th century CE fort wall that defined the boundaries of Ahmedabad during the rule of Ahmed Shah, as well as Maratha period fortification. Lack of maintenance has led to masonry decay. Municipal Corporation (AMC) has built the riverfront near the old fort wall. Trees have grown out of the historic wall, breaching through its two metre thick breadth.

The mosque is from 16th-17th century CE. It is in ruins and is in danger of disappearance. Panipat has a range of built heritage typologies that are in varying conditions; some date from Sultanate, late Lodhi and Mughal periods. In the civic and defense buildings that are in use, modifications (i.e. additions, alterations, expansions) are by and large undertaken with materials that are incompatible with the historic fabric. An example is a historic gateway in Panipat – Bu Ali Shah Darwaza which has a vaulted ceiling in lakhori bricks. It is in a state of distress and facing encroachments.

Dak Bungalow Chouraha stands at the intersection of the historic Bailey Road, Fraser Road and the Dak Bungalow Road, all three names still prevalent, even though post-Independence the street names were changed. On Fraser Road, dubbed the ‘Fleet Street of Patna’, were located, besides the Dak Bungalow, some of the finest houses, mansions, kothis and palatial houses, most of which were lost to the real estate boom. Opposite the Dak Bungalow was the iconic ‘Rizwan Castle’, perhaps the only specimen of a Tudor castle built in the 1920s in Bihar by Hasan Imam, which has fallen to apathy and reduced to a dilapidated state. The condition of ‘Sultan Palace’ built in the same era by Sir Sultan Ahmad, the legendary barrister has been reduced to a poorly maintained government office.

Located at lower Agram Road, Bengaluru. Under the Army area, not accessible to public. There were several graves dating as far back as 1808, after the cantonment was shifted to Bangalore in 1806 from Srirangapatnam. The site is of about 4.87 acres and has 824 graves including many great men, soldiers, wives, children and pastors. It contained interesting cenotaphs and epitaphs. The Cemetery was disused from around 1870, and was abandoned after the 1920s. It is not maintained and is in ruins. The site is under threat due to vegetation growth and water-logging. Even if structures are not restored, the landscape, including drainage, should be done on top priority.

Bagh Wazir Khan is located south of Chini Ka Rauza and can be reached after crossing Katra Wazir Khan, Yamuna Bridge Road. Bagh Wazir Khan was built by Afzal Khan, Wazir of Shah Jahan. It was designed as a small garden facing the Yamuna. Very less of the garden now remains, it once consisted of two corner octagonal turrets and a central pavilion structure. There are also signs of an archway below the ground level. The structure is in ruins now. Only a three-arched gateway of the pavilion is remaining along with the burjs.

The dome of the 1750 CE chhatri rests on 12 pillars. The chhatri has simple exteriors and detailed painted interiors. It shows signs of deterioration. The painted circular courses of the dome interior consist of floral patterns and figures. There are illustrations from the scriptures as well as from the life of Sardul Singh. He was a Kachwaha Rajput who took over Jhunjhunu, Shekhawati from Kyamkhani Nawabs, thus re-establishing Shekhawat rule in the region. He is known for developing a new system of property division among descendents.

The mills plunged into an irreversible decline by the mid-1970s as they lost out to the rapidly growing power loom industry. Shakti Mills is one such space that was left out from gentrification because of continuing litigation.

Recognizing the aspects of the significance attached to weavers’ homes of Chanderi, they are part of the series titled ‘Iconic Sari Weaving Clusters of India’ on UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage Sites. Built with local materials, responding to local climate, with region-specific layouts and design elements. These traditional homes are in the nature of artisanal workshops, providing under one roof, living space for the family as well as working space to accommodate the looms and other ancillary equipment for the home-based occupation. This urban fabric is now under serious threat from increasing population density and the pressures of economic and social change. With pressures of urbanisation, there is a risk of disappearance.

Very unique to the Doon Valley is its network of canals. The canals of Doon date back to about 1757, the time of Rani Karnavati. The major canals of Doon in the year 1873 were the Beejapore, Rajpur, Kutha Pathar, Khalunga and Jakhan watercourses. Of these, the Rajpur Canal consists of two branches, the Dehra branch (flowing past the Head Post Office and Clock Tower) and the Dharampur branch or East Canal. Dehra branch canal has totally been encroached upon and is not visible. Dharampur Canal has been covered for road widening and thus the Doon Valley has lost an important relic of history. All these Canals are under threat and the Rajpur Canal, East Canal and Kanwali Canal have already disappeared due to faulty planning. These canals lent an eclectic neo-colonial character to the Doon Valley and their destruction has torn the entire fabric of this beautiful town.

It houses the Hussaini Alam Government Girls’ College in the same compound. The building suffers from lack of maintenance and care. It is in an advanced state of decay owing to neglect. It appears to be a case of waiting for imminent collapse through denial of maintenance and continued deterioration.

Established nearly 200 years back by Thakur Vishvanath Singh, who was the zamindar of Fingeshwar. It is believed to be one of the important forts amongst the 36 forts of Chhattisgarh. It was extremely important from the administrative and authoritative point of view. The precinct is in a very poor condition. Only a small part is used as residence; the rest is abandoned. There are many examples of forts and palaces in the country, being conserved and converted for a variety of uses. The lifespans of such structures can be increased by their continued usage, however with sensitivity to the historic materials and traditions.

A number of structures such as LIC Buildings are from the British period. Many are deteriorating due to neglect. Structural safety eventually suffers and such buildings are then termed ‘unsafe’ and slated for demolition. Many public institutions own heritage structures but lack expertise in maintenance and a scientific approach to conservation of their built heritage. Thus many dilapidated civic buildings can be seen, requiring urgent repairs. The approach for many government-owned historic buildings is to let them decay through a denial of proper maintenance, later declared unmaintainable or ‘condemned’, and earmark money to pull them down. Thereafter fresh allocation of funds is made to raise modern structures in their place. Instead, a practise of regular maintenance and also reuse of such building stock can contribute positively to our resource crunch.

According to local tradition, Dara Shikhoh, the eldest son of Shah Jahan, spent time here translating the Sanskrit Upanishads into Persian. While the baradari indeed dates back to the first half of the 17th century, the British later used it as an adalat, or place of justice. The main baradari has been demolished a few years ago. There are still a few traces remaining, such as the paired carved stone pilasters and the gateway arches that could still be conserved as a memorial to a very significant cultural initiative of the 17th century. This is very much a part of the role of Varanasi as a centre of learning and inquiry.

Dhowra Baoli is attributed to 17th century CE. The baoli had rich ornamentation. Around the foliated arch of the portico, in a rectangular frame, are remains of fine carved bas-reliefs. It is imperative that holistic research is undertaken to understand traditional water supply and collection techniques, as these could well form part of the solution for the current issues of climate change and sustainability.

Fort Bassein, now referred to as Vasai Fort, was built in 1532 CE by the then Sultan of Gujarat, Bahadur Shah and is situated in village Vasai. Though initially, it belonged to the Arab Sultanate of Cambay, later it came under the control of the Portuguese. However, the Marathas took over the fort in 1739. The fort is currently in ruins. In the 18th century, the fort was captured by Chimaji Appa after a three year long campaign. There is a statue of Chimajiappa in Vasai fort. What remains are the parts of the imposing 4.5 kms long fort walls, two access doors (‘Porta do Mar’ and ‘Porta da Terra’) and remnants of Portuguese buildings and churches dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Jumerati Gate lies in the old city of Bhopal near Jumerati Bazaar. Nawab Dost Mohammad Khan fortified the city and built the Fatehgarh fort during 1720-1726 CE. The gate was built in the 18th century, along with the stone wall, for the protection of the fort and the public residing there. Jumerati is one of the six gates built and named after different days of the week. It was built in the Indo-Afghan style of architecture, constructed in coarse rubble masonry with lime mortar and covered with stucco. Low maintenance of the gate has resulted in cracks and weakening of the structure, as well as vegetation growth. Electrical wires and water pipelines are destroying visual integrity. The gate is surrounded by shops from all sides.

All throughout India, there are examples of residential architecture built between 19th and 20th centuries, which were usually built by traders, merchants and other well-off middle-class Indians during that time. These buildings use a variety of sources and inspirations for the elements of design and ornamentation they employ. The houses of Bohra neighbourhoods in Gujarat towns such as Sidhpur and Kapadvanj are examples of such residential buildings (havelis). Due to migration and lack of funds, 19th century Bohra Havelis now have fewer caretakers or proprietors. They are in need of preservation.

Other than maintenance issues, there is another peculiar threat to the building – threat of safety from monkeys, that are rampant in the area.

Constructed in stone with lime mortar. It is not in use and is under the management of PWD. The structure is in danger of disappearance. Most of the fort walls and roofs have already fallen apart. Wooden joists of the ceilings of the structure are deteriorating.

Constructed during the reign of Maharaja Pratap Singh of Kashmir. 1885-1925. It is a unique wooden channel that carried water from Jhelum to the power plant in Mohura. It is in danger of disappearance. Kashmir has also lost most of its wooden bridges and the few that are left are also vulnerable to demolition. Urban infrastructure-related schemes have also taken their toll on the vernacular residential architecture of the region. Added to this damage, is the increasing loss of some of the traditional building crafts and the technical knowledge associated with them.

Contemporary research has numerous examples exploring the adaptation of spaces for their optimum use.

It is disgraceful that built heritage resources are allowed to be neglected and destroyed rather than be reused, which should be the way forward towards sustainability and revenue generation.

The house is located on a ridge in Deu Village, Simkhalka, Damthang-Rabongla Road, Namchi, South Sikkim. This is one of the few remaining buildings which still retain their original character with the least transformations. The original house was completely built-in stone in 1930 CE. A new extension of the house was built in the 1960s to accommodate the extended family. The newer building is constructed in timber and has a stone plinth. The lower area is used for storage in both structures. Water-logging and dampness is damaging the stone walls as well as timber walls. It is in an advanced state of decay.

Lakshagriha is an intriguing structure situated in the Khallari village of Mahasamund. Even though it is on the verge of disappearance, it is an iconic structure, attributed to the Mahabharata era. A temple-like structure, said to have been made opposite the Lakshagriha mentioned in the Mahabharata – it is believed that this is the location where the tunnel started, which led the Pandavas under the hill and helped them flee. At present it is in a very poor condition. Enveloped by heavy vegetation, many parts of the structure are now buried. The roof has collapsed and the remaining parts are in danger of disappearance.

The palace dates from 17th to 19th century CE. It is in a ruinous state. With clearly visible signs of deterioration, it is an example of indifference. A newer inhabited palace is built behind the valley. Above, on the hillcrest, are the neglected ruins of Ajaigarh Fort, reached by a rough trail. Owing to the enormity of scale, the maintenance of forts and palaces is generally demanding for owners. The lifespans of the structures of this unique built heritage typology can be increased by their continued usage. Even if partial adaptation of the space is undertaken for reuse, it can contribute to the structure’s upkeep and self-sustainability.

Built around 1860 and also referred to as Horticulture Lecture Hall, it was renamed in honour of Gustav Krumbiegel, superintendent of Lalbagh from 1908 to 1932. It is built in classic Greek style. The columns (alders) are in typical Corinthian style and have triangular pediments above. This prominent heritage resource is in poor condition due to unsympathetic repairs, neglect and lack of funds. The abandoned structure is in an advanced state of decay. There is a great potential for capacity building within the area and as a resource for other heritage areas. Engineers from PWD and BBMP, with a large number of public buildings of historic importance under their jurisdiction, need to be made aware of traditional materials and their use for repair and conservation. There is an interest within individual contractors for increasing their skills in this area.

In the tourist destination Agra, due to the presence of a large number of protected monuments including 3 world heritage sites, the other heritage properties are ignored by the administration in terms of investment in their repair, maintenance and access. Owing to the insensitive attitude of the authorities and society, these sites become dump yards and are partially or completely transformed. Encroachment and vandalism are major concerns for unprotected heritage properties.

District and Sessions Court Complex, Ambala is an example where the Records Block is in a dilapidated state and declared unsafe by PWD. The abandoned structures in the complex are in an advanced state of decay. There is much scope of generating awareness towards conservation in civic bodies, especially regarding working with sensitivity towards architectural heritage, the use of compatible materials and preserving unique features.

Boter Kotha Vav is a brick construction, 4-storeyed liner type of Nanda stepwell. It is severely threatened. Uncountable historic water structures have been lost to neglect and rapid urbanisation. A wide variety of traditional water harvesting, storage and water supply structures and systems have been functional across the country since centuries and known by various colloquial terms in different areas. Yet, there is a trending disregard for them and the most common state of water structures is there use as garbage dumps. With the continuing pace of insensitive development, this abundance of Vavs of Gujarat, that we so intrinsically associate with the region and take for granted, will not be part of our setting in the recent future.

Situated in the middle of Pali City, Somnath Temple was constructed in Vikram Samvat 1209 CE. Prince Raj Kumar Pal Solanki of Gujarat brought the Shivlinga from the Saurashtra area because Somnath Temple and Somnath Mahadev were the targets of attack by Mahmud of Ghazni. The temple has a special sanctity. It has intricate carvings on the shikhar and pinnacle and meticulously chiselled circular patterns on the ceiling. The ancient statues and sculptures are facing erosion. There are issues of lack of maintenance as well as encroachments.

The historic built fabric is at risk of incompatible additions, alterations and replacement that are out of context and character of the area. The pilgrimage rituals of daily, weekly and annual cycles and the vast footfall during festivities challenge the limited natural and municipal resources of Gaya.

Old Godavari Bridge or Havelock Bridge was commissioned in 1897. It served trains plying between Howrah and Madras. It is the earliest of 3 bridges that span the Godavari River at Rajahmundry. A decommissioned bridge, it is proposed as a tourist destination with a heritage bazaar, after acquiring it from Railways. Any proposal may be beneficial only after necessary conservation and safety measures to the site.

There are about 20 bridges and causeways across the Gosthani, Sarada and Varaha rivers. Most of these stone and brick marvels are in a dilapidated condition. They were decommissioned mainly due to increasing traffic and the need for modern structures. These structures can be used to teach engineering students the basics of civil engineering and better quality as they bear testimony to the prowess of engineers, who toiled hard to connect the entire subcontinent.

Adaptive reuse will ensure maintenance and their integration with the daily lives of the local community as well. Reuse of heritage structures could become a tool for economic generation for the locals and also motivation for other owners to reuse their structures appropriately.

Latitude: 27.850211, Longitude: 95.750322, Elevation: 126 m. The settlement of over 360 homes extends from aath mile to nou mile, Dhoompathar (Sunpura-Sapakhua road), Tinsukia District. This is about a 100 years old settlement with ‘Assam type’ architectural style. Regular floods, even upto 2-3 times a year are a major threat. Traditionally, cheshmabera is a bamboo and timber wall covered with mud plaster. Although replaced with cement in place of mud, the cheshmabera technique is still in use. GI/ tin sheets are often used now instead of kher roof covering (material derived from plantations).

However, the art deco architecture is eclipsed by a flurry of food shops and their logos. With flourishing fast-food outlets, the ground floor is buzzing with students and shoppers. The open bar has been shut down, but there is a bar and a restaurant on the first floor. The box-office counter was newly done up.

‘Iconic Saree Weaving Clusters of India’ is on UNESCO’s Tentative List for World Heritage sites. The clusters span across 5 states of the country, Telangana being one of them. The dual-purpose vernacular architecture, located in traditional community clusters, is an extremely critical aspect of keeping alive the ancient craft of handloom weaving. The well-functioning plan has developed from the livelihood needs of the inhabitants. Every member of the family is involved in the various processes related to weaving. This 70 year old house was under severe threat of disappearance, and has been lost due to pressures of urbanisation and the lack of adequate support.

According to popular belief, the impression of the believed footprints of Muhammad on black stone, was brought from Mecca, by some distinguished pilgrim. During the 1857 War of Independence, the relic was removed. The structure is in a ruinous condition and on the verge of collapse.

Ornate architectural elements can be seen in the workshop building, which belongs to 1900 CE. It is located 80 metres southwest of Sabzi Mandi, Bausadwada. One of the major issues for the decay of heritage structures in Diu is biological growth (algae and vegetation) and dampness, which has caused many structures to fall apart. People have come up with numerous methods to repair their structures but few of the structures are left untouched in a dilapidated state. Lack of awareness and economic conditions contribute towards the issues of decay in historic buildings.

Today being a Monday in the Holy month of Saawan, the Heritage at Risk Register entry is of a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located in Chikmagalur District, on the outskirts of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, the Nagalingeshwara Temple is one of the many Shiva temples in the region. Stone inscriptions found in the complex reveal that the temple dates back to 14th century. It lies is a dilapidated condition with collapsed roof and walls. There are parts of the boundary wall visible, however majority of it remains unearthed. Due to lack of maintenance and excessive vegetation growth, the temple is in a ruinous state. Following a request from community members, a preliminary assessment was undertaken as part of technical assistance offered by INTACH.

There are a lot of encroachments at the heritage site and unhygienic conditions exist due to throwing of garbage and the premises being used as public toilets. It is at a place which was called Kaga Teerth at some point of time. Most of the inscriptions have been destroyed; only some are found scattered. Due to this it becomes difficult to identify the chhatris. A crusher placed near the site a few years ago leads to an immense amount of dust along with the vibrations, proving harmful for the heritage site. Other than Shitla Mata Temple and its pond, there are around three hundred old chhatris (memorials) built of the Rajput Sardars. More than 100 memorials are on the verge of being destroyed due to negligence.

This is the most significant stambh of the Bees Duvariya, which heralds the Sati of 20 queens of the then King Raja Laxmansahay.

Nazarbagh Palace (known as Lukhdirji Engineering College) was commissioned around 1890s by Sir Waghji Thakore, ruler of Morvi State. In 1954, Maharaja Lukhdhir Sinhji donated the palace in the service of higher education in the country, then being only the second such institution in Gujarat. The building has exquisite craftsmanship. INTACH has written to the departments of R&B and Education at various occasions to stall its constant risk of demolition and offer pro bono services. Abandoned and lacking maintenance, the building is prone to human-induced threats and persistent defilement. Part of it had a fire outbreak recently in 2021. This historic landmark of Morvi requires conserving by all means, to revive its grandeur to once again be the pride of Morvi. Any required college expansion can be done in the adequately available surrounding land, instead of its demolition.

Gandikota is a small village on the banks of river Pennar, 15 km from Jammalamadugu in Kadapa District. The 150 years old village settlement is in the setting of the Gandikota Fort (400-600 years old). Founded in 1123 by Kapa Raja of nearby Bommanapalle village and a subordinate of Ahavamalla Someswara I, the Western Chalukyan king of Kalyana. The town played a significant role during the Kakatiya, Vijayanagara and Qutub Shahi periods. Surrounded by a deep valley, impassable hills and the river Pennar flowing 300 ft. below, its location affords strong natural defense to the occupants of the Fort. Though the Fort is in the purview of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), in the village many historic houses are abandoned and under deterioration. Needs a comprehensive approach to preserve the traditional settlement and architectural patterns of a Rayalaseema village.

July 19 is celebrated as International Palace Day. Forts and palaces occupy a large quantum of built heritage in India. Old portion of Nilagiri Palace is from 1450-1500 CE and the new part from 1898 CE. It is in an advanced state of decay, on the verge of collapse. Its clock tower had collapsed, and the entire western side caved in. The portion is now completely abandoned.
Owing to the peculiar issues of ownership and scale of forts and palaces, a central government-backed body should be formulated specifically for addressing the overarching issues in the interest of heritage. Its role should include facilitating early resolution of issues pertaining to disputed ownership, laying down guidelines and best practises for conversion into other uses, formulating case-specific maintenance mechanisms, technical assistance and financial corpus with public-private stakeholders.

Careful planning is necessary for the preservation of the unprotected sites.

Despite immense cultural significance, the kund is facing threat from encroachment and structural distress of the retaining walls. It is in a state of neglect and drain water is disposed into it. The ghats are in shambles and wild vegetation has engulfed the site.

Sunrays first reach Mahadev’s idol in the morning. Main temple is in a fair condition, but some parts like shikhar and walls have structural cracks and vegetation growth. The temple is managed by the Ganesh mandal of the lane and used during Ganesh festivals. There is no proper authority to take care of the temple. Lack of funds for maintenance has led to the current state and the structure shows signs of disrepair. Talegaon is located only 30 km from Pune and faces tremendous threats from developmental pressure and migration.

Some Shekhawati havelis with wall paintings are even haphazardly ripped open to set up shops or workshops. There exist issues concerning encroachment, crowding and designing in context of heritage. There needs to be an urban policy and arrangement with owners of havelis to prevent further decay and initiate conservation.

Situated in Abi Guzar, Srinagar, late 19th century building. The old Customs building on the banks of river Jhelum, which was lately used as a residence, collapsed partially and the remaining portions of the damaged building were being pulled down. In a post-flood damage assessment of Srinagar, it was observed that the waters of the Jhelum breached the banks after water levels rose, overflowing settlements along the way and flood channels overflowed. Kashmir Valley being a flood plain of river Jhelum and its tributaries, had most of its central and southern zones submerged. Damaged heritage residences are being renovated and reconstructed with modern materials.

A mosque and a tomb together form the Mosque Complex at Bhondsi, a village midway between Gurgaon and Sohna. Located along the State Highway, this is a 16th century mosque, used by the Khanzadas of Mewat. It is in a dilapidated condition due to neglect, and in danger of disappearance, with the masonry being hollowed out for use by locals. The structure is partly collapsed and masonry from most of the accessible elements of the mosque is gorged out, such as from the tapering turrets and walls between arched openings. Adding to the state of distress is a garbage dump, demarcated in brick behind the mosque.

Though Goa, as a state, ranks high on the literacy index, it does not incorporate awareness of its local history at school level, leading to low awareness about its rich local heritage at mass levels.

Location: 25.631722, 85.036520 Erstwhile Defence State Officer’s residence. The building is a property of the Indian Army. Has been leased to BRC for 99 years. The military base at Danapur was built in 1765, making it the second military cantonment in the country and also the largest at the time (shared by European troops). It has Patna’s oldest churches – Havlock, St. Lukes and St Stephens, built by the Spanish, British and Italians. The cantonment also has a hospital that was used during World War II. Apart from the built heritage, Danapur is known for migratory birds.

Important pilgrim place built in the 17th century by Qasim Muhammad Sheikh. Local legends attribute the first settlement on these islands to the period of Cheraman Perumal, the last king of Kerala. The influence of the traditional architecture of Kerala is obvious in the traditional buildings in the islands. The islanders lived and built in harmony with nature; however, contemporary materials from the mainland are increasingly being used now, which are unrelated to the prevalent climatic and ecological conditions. Pressures of urbanisation as well as government-initiated schemes result in reduced use of traditional materials. Our aim should be proper, careful and planned use of the resources locally available, (also recommended by Centre of Science & Technology for Rural Development).

One of the oldest government buildings in Old Town Visakhapatnam, it is likely to have existed from the times of the Dutch occupation of the town. From 1870 it was office of the District Collector. In neglected and dilapidated condition, what stands today is just the front portion of the once grand edifice. Hudhud cyclone that struck in October 2014 completely destroyed the tiled roofing. The arsenal also housed a foundry for manufacturing cannons. This part was razed to the ground many years ago. In the recent past, the building functions as Queen Mary High School. Unfortunately, the authorities have very little concern for such heritage buildings.

Constructed near Gangapuri Ghat, Wai, the institute started by Brahmibhut Swami Kewalananda in 1925, is at a risk of collapsing. One of the last surviving Ved pathshalas housed in a wada is on the verge of losing its original use (and intangible heritage) because of the demise of the guruji imparting Vedic knowledge. Wai being close to Pune and also near the hill station Mahabaleshwar, is facing immense urban pressures. Wadas are being demolished and replaced by the new urban form borrowed from the metropolis. Another issue is that of retaining the local community due to limited facilities for education and job opportunities.

Nanta Mahal is a fortress constructed over a period from early 13th to 18th century CE. It has palaces and structures from different periods – early, middle, late and present. It was used as a refugee camp and a hostel for teachers when a teachers’ training college was housed here. Many structures in the region were built of mud, bricks, timber and other such perishable materials and hence, have not survived. The earliest surviving secular buildings are the palaces and military structures of the Vijayanagar-Nayak and Maratha dynasties (14th to 19th century). Maratha period buildings like chattrams (resthouses or inns) in the Thanjavur area such as Muktambal Chattram in Orathanad and traditional residences in many parts of rural Tamil Nadu are under severe threat. The Chattram was built by Sarfoji Raja II in 1802 CE and now is in a state of neglect. The lack of user-friendly guidelines for such buildings adds to the challenges.

These could provide sufficient information as far as archaeological research is concerned and hence need timely preservation.

The ancient cave is situated at Ramgarh hills of Surguja district (Kudargadh Road, Audgi, Vikaskhand, Surajpur). In local language, jogi is a hermit (tapasvi) and mara is a resting place. It is a stone cave and can accommodate up to 20-25 people. Shows signs of decay. The art heritage of Chhattisgarh, also known as Daksina Kosala, can be traced back to as early as circa 200 BCE on the basis of the word Ipadakha (Sanskrit form – rupadaksha) mentioned in an inscription in Jogimara cave. A neighbouring cave known as Sitabenga cave is considered the oldest theatre of India.

They are buildings of local importance, possessing special architectural or historical value. They form local landmarks contributing to the image and identity of the town.

Two tombs are located nearly 500m to the west of Kaanch Mahal, Sikandra, Agra. They are from mid-16th century CE and in danger of disappearance, despite being situated near a much visited site. In the tourist destination Agra, due to the presence of a large number of protected monuments including 3 world heritage sites, the other heritage properties are ignored by the administration in terms of investment in their repair, maintenance and access. Owing to the insensitive attitude of the authorities and society, these sites become dump yards and are partially or completely transformed. Encroachment and vandalism are major concerns for unprotected heritage properties.

Post offices form part of our civic built heritage. The Old Post Office is from the 1850s and is located in Delhi’s Civil Lines area on Shamnath Marg. It is a rare example of early colonial style, which has survived till date in its original design. Its proximity to Delhi’s Vidhan Sabha and Metcalfe House also suggests its importance. The structure is abandoned and requires urgent attention. Was used as a guest house once a new post office building was constructed in 1920s (the new one continues with its original function). Old P.O. has high potential for adaptive reuse owing to its historical value and locational advantage.

The 17th century CE Mughal era baoli is located along the Badshahi Sadak (the Imperial Highway). It is part of the cluster comprising of caravan serais, bridges, kosminars and water structures. While several serais and kosminars were accorded protection, several water structures remain unprotected, even though the typology is directly associated with the Mughal imperial highway. It is evidence of the technical advancement of the time. Three arched openings overlooking the shaft of the well cooled air for entering the chambers. The structure is under threat of disappearance. The chambers are in an advanced stage of structural decay due to heavy growth of vegetation.

Such quaint precincts and historic buildings contribute to the richness, familiarity and character in the fast-paced developing cities.

Built by the Singh dynasty, 18th century CE. Constructed in the Nagara and Bangla style of architecture, the temples also indicate a strong Mughal influence. Seen here are Bhagwati Temple, with Gauri Shankar Temple at the rear, both lying in a dilapidated state. There were about 174 temples in Ichak village, but only a few of them remain now, of which nearly all lie in utter neglect. Many of them are devoid of any idols which may have been stolen. Despite that, the temples still reflect the splendour that they once commanded. The boundary wall surrounding the temple complex stands in a pitiable condition.

According to local legend, the temple was established by Maharaja Hira Singh. Hence, the fort and township was named after him.

Rajwada was the major socio-cultural platform for the town. Bhor being situated near Pune, has major threats from developmental pressures, and is rapidly losing its unique heritage characteristics. Being a popular destination for film shoots, the Rajwada is vulnerable to inappropriate interventions.

The land of 36 garhs (forts) now has only ruins remaining of many of these. The 12th century CE fort of Kosgaigarh was the sub or semi-capital and was attacked continuously by Pathans. It is situated on a hill approximately 2000 feet above mean sea level and constructed entirely of stone by the then King of Ratanpur Bahaarsai. It is one of the most important forts of the region, but now has very little left. Denuded and looted, the structural elements of the fort have been found in people’s houses, serving as construction material. The fort is presently in a ruinous condition and the remnants should be preserved.

Pride in one’s traditions – this is palpable in the owner’s enthusiasm to show the home! Kebali village has a settlement of Idu Mishmi tribe. Traditional material from the region is used in the vernacular chang-ghar (stilted house) – jing patta roof, timber, bamboo, cane, bola tree wood posts. Due to the insensitive road widening, the soil erosion of the hill is a major threat to settlements, and is especially evident when natural calamities occur. Impacts of inconsiderate development projects in eco-sensitive zones must be well understood by authorities. Silt deposition due to dam constructions and lacking road engineering solutions for terrains and forested areas are examples.

This site is under the control of the forest department and can be protected. It is partly destroyed. Located about 45 km southeast of Gudur, can also be reached from Nayudupeta (Gudur & Nayudupeta are on Chennai-Kolkata railway line).

A 776 m long, stone masonry arch bridge across Godavari River at Adilabad-Nizamabad district’s border. About 90 years old, it is an engineering marvel from the Nizams’ rule. Threatened by growth of banyan trees in the structure. Went out of use in 2009 as it could not cope with the growing demands of transport development, when the new twin bridges on the four-lane NH 44 came up. Instead of neglecting historic bridges from 18th-20th centuries, the stone and brick marvels need to be looked at as exceptional educational resources for civil engineering, relevant even in present times. An example of the human values attached to the bridge was found in the inaugural plaque which carried a verse seeking forgiveness of the river for having hindered its free flow by way of the bridge.

The structure is a Rashmancha on an octagonal base and is situated in Panskura Block, East Medinipur District. Original date of construction is not known; however, it was restored in 1891 by a lady patron. It is a significant example of ‘baroque’ vase pinnacle turrets (or what is locally known as ‘behrisune’). Shatero-chura or seventeen towers of ‘beharisune’ type. The building is dilapidated due to neglect and lack of maintenance. Major cracks indicate severe structural distress. It is at risk of collapse and in danger of disappearance. Excessive vegetation growth can be seen. Urgent interventions are required for structural repair and conservation.

The traditional homes optimally utilise the locally available materials to suit the climatic conditions. The roof details illustrate the fine construction techniques. Some houses have the upper floor built of lesser height, generally to accommodate functions such as kitchen. These homes are origins of some of the most exquisite Ikat sarees, famous from the region. The dual-purpose vernacular architecture, located in traditional community clusters, is an extremely critical aspect of keeping alive the ancient craft of handloom weaving. But these are at risk of disappearance due to pressures of urbanisation. Schemes such as Awas Yojana that promote new construction materials, only add to the challenges.

The temple was built in the 19th century on the banks of River Ganga The King of Bharatpur was a devotee of Lord Shiva, who built the temple with the hope to be blessed with a child. The old market street near Khaspur (that was established by Sher Shah Suri, 16th century) continues to flourish even today. He encouraged trade across the district, considering its strategic location along the banks of river Ganga.

DDA Shalimar Garden is located in Shalimar Bagh Colony in northwest Delhi. Shalimar Garden was laid out by Shahjahan in 1648 as a pleasure garden. Aurangzeb crowned himself emperor here in a coup in 1658. Other than the protected Sheesh Mahal and few ponds, there are several historic structures in the garden that are unprotected, and are in an advanced state of deterioration. Some structures like Hammam are already lost. Under the British resident David Ochterlony the garden was converted into a private estate in 1818, where he added some structures. Ruins of structures are still seen in the garden but are disappearing due to lack of any repairs or protection.

Villagers are undertaking unguided restoration, further damaging the stability of the building. There are also other interventions in close vicinity.

Mandatory heritage impact assessments and a quick response mechanism for the recommendations must be in place for all proposed projects, including for unprotected heritage.

Located in village Mohanpur, adjacent to Fatehabad, 30 km from Agra. In 1658 CE, following Emperor Shah Jahan’s illness, the battle of Samugarh was fought between Aurangzeb and his brother Dara Shikoh, at Samugarh, 8 miles east of Agra. The Badshahi Bagh with an elephant stable, was built by Aurangzeb in 1659 to symbolize his victory, as part of four other constructions in the vicinity, namely, a tank named Shahi Talaab, a Sarai, a bridge and Shahi Masjid. The structures in Badshahi Bagh are in danger of disappearance. The garden gate and walls are in a state of distress. The roof of the built structure has largely collapsed.

The palaces of prime zamindaris have been neglected and they present a serious case of built heritage in distress. Komakhan Palace is in an extremely dilapidated state. The major part of the precinct is abandoned; only few rooms are used as residence. Vegetation growth and biodegradation has accelerated the deterioration process rapidly. Major parts of the palace are in a state of disappearance.

Each ethnic community has its own code of house construction. There are a prescribed number of rooms with specific names, fireplace and house deity’s place. A unique construction technique which forms an important architectural feature of a typical Meitei house is non-use of nails or any other metallic substances to secure and fasten the beams and other supports. Vernacular architecture needs to be supported for continuance of the traditional knowledge. Support mechanism must only be developed in collaboration and with approval from the community.

Second American Missionary Bungalow in Nagaland (Upper Bungalow). Constructed in 1896 under the supervision of American Missionary, Rev. S. A. Perrine. Nepalese sawyers were employed to cut the lumber; Nagas did not have the instruments at the time. As many as 200 Nagas in one day brought the lumber on their backs from the forest from 2 to 3 miles distance. Chinese carpenters built it under the direction of the Garo Mission. The site faces pressures of urbanisation.

A 100 year old settlement exists at Sunpura-Sapakhua road, Tinsukia District. ‘Assam type’ architectural style is found in the region. This is an earthquake resistant construction which includes symmetrical configuration, lightweight materials for walls and roofs, and flexible or hinged connections between various wooden elements at different levels. It is also designed to suit the climate by ensuring proper ventilation and roof inclination. The threat is the lack of understanding about the scientific base of construction and its durability, due to which a large number of these structures are being pulled down. Pressures of urbanisation and preference for replacement of traditional materials add to the challenges.

In Namchi, the Ngadak Gompa complex is an example of transformation in the last 50 years. The oldest Ngadak Gompa was built in the 18th century with stone laid in mud mortar and timber. It has wall paintings. In the 1960s a new gompa was built towards the west of the old gompa. In 2014, another gompa was added to the site and is a huge 5-storey high RCC building. The oldest gompa is structurally consolidated, but still remains in a bad state, full of debris.

Associated with India’s struggle for independence. The modest structure is one of the locations of forced settlements of the prisoners who worked in the brick fields of Dundas Point producing 1500 bricks per day. The other remaining heritage buildings in the site are two barracks, mess, cook’s house, old police station, storage house and horse barn. The site is abandoned and in a state of neglect, susceptible to encroachment. Has potential for reuse.

This 20th century built heritage is a unique medical facility in its intent, design, and construction. This architectural and medical innovation is the only such surviving structure from amongst the three ever built, the other two having been destroyed during World War II. Built-in 1934 under Jam Ranjit Sinhji, the then ruler of the erstwhile Princely State of Nawanagar, it is located within the M P Shah Medical College, Jamnagar. The rotating solarium, allowed ingress of sunlight throughout the day (Heliotherapy – treating illnesses by exposure to regulated solar radiation). It was built as an improvement of the first solarium at Aix-les-Bains, France. The structure has been abandoned, with progressive signs of deterioration and loss of the steel components of the platform.

The Jagannath Sadak was the historic pilgrim route from Kolkata to Puri. From 1825, it was known as the Orissa Trunk Road. There are remnants of religious structures from over twelve centuries and more than 200 archaeological remains along the route. Many of the old structures are still upright and can be restored. Most of them have fallen into disuse and decay and are in danger of disappearance. Some have been converted into government offices, police stations, dak bungalows etc. Marker stones, survey pillars, remnants of British era factories, encampments and mathas also remain scattered along the old road.

In the early history of Palamu, three aboriginal races Kbarwars, Oraons and Cheros, practically ruled over the tract. Raja Man Singh invaded and captured Palamu in 1574. In 1584 Akbar attacked on Khukhra (Jharkhand) and made it a territory under the leadership of Shahbaz Khan Kamba. The 16th century Palamu Fort is in a ruined state.

This British colonial structure is from 1913. European Ward continues to be the administrative area in Shillong. Such public buildings from similar time period face pressures of modernisation. They have alterations with non-traditional materials and many are at risk of demolition. There is need for consistent awareness generation amongst local body officials and also for organising public engagement activities on regular basis – to inform and educate local residents about the importance of such buildings and the need to conserve them.

A traditional Godavari area Brahmin settlement from around 1910 CE. However, the families migrated here around 300 years ago, bringing the Agraharam pattern of architecture. ‘Agraharam’ literally translates to ‘a garland of houses’ which means a row of houses connected with each other like in a garland keeping the temple as the focus. Peruru is one of the few villages of the region which has chosen to retain its traditional architecture even amidst modernization around. It is under threat due to urbanization.

However, buildings such as these are fast deteriorating due to lack of maintenance. Abandoned structures are in danger of collapse. Often, the low prioritization of allocation of funds for unprotected historic buildings stems from indifference and lack of awareness regarding built heritage.

Built in 1855 CE by Maharaja Thakur Singh during the brief period that Kawardha state capital was shifted to Rajnawa Gaon (and that is how the village was named). During the British Raj, Kawardha State was one of the princely states of the Eastern States Agency. The temple continues to be in use and hold high significance for the local community, despite being in a state of structural distress and partial collapse. It is at risk of complete collapse, with failure of the brick vaulted roof, major structural cracks and detachment of the free-standing walls.

The fort was owned by the zamindar family of Pramilla Reddy. The present village of Kotakonda was once a part of Gadhi Lokayapalli Samsthanam. This was the entrance gateway to village Kotakonda, along which a new road has been constructed. The remnants of the gateway stand out in the ruins and one can only imagine the grandeur of the fort. Besides this, there are few bastions of the fort wall remaining in this area.

Six-level bawri constructed in 1614 by Sheikh Mohammed of Nagaur during the reign of Daulat Khan.

Is in an advanced state of dilapidation and completely filled with garbage (construction debris as wells as hazardous waste from the adjoining hospital). Unfortunately this is the condition of numerous stepwells across the country, that are now used as garbage dumpyards.

Yeola and adjoining villages are famous for producing the exquisite hand-woven Paithani sarees. The dual-purpose vernacular architecture, located in traditional community clusters, is an extremely critical aspect of keeping alive the ancient craft of handloom weaving. The traditional wadas and homes incorporate work spaces and building details that are particularly suited for looms and associated activities of handloom weaving. With pressures of urbanisation, there is a risk of disappearance, especially of humble vernacular houses. It is essential to maintain the traditional clusters that play a vital role in the various processes involved in the craft.

Built in 1629 by Saif Khan. Being a famous college, it flourished from 1740-48 during the time of Nawab Zain-ud-Din Habiat Jung, who also added a library with rare Persian and Arabic manuscripts. The building is in a ruinous condition and a small new building is built in the complex for the madarsa. The adjoining structures (chhatri, bastions, etc.) in the complex are in a dilapidated state and on the verge of disappearance.

Vernacular architecture is an often neglected typology of unprotected built heritage. This is an example of the wide variety of vernacular built heritage – Hinpha (bamboo house). This is a 100+ year-old vernacular Chang-ghar (stilted house). However, such homes may require rebuilding of some parts after every few years, and this keeps the building tradition and skills alive. These buildings are facing pressures of urbanisation. Vernacular construction materials and techniques are at risk of being replaced with non-contextual contemporary materials. Such as, the traditional mud-plastered cheshmabera walls are being cement-plastered now. Lately, there is use of asbestos or G.I. for roofing.

Lahuradeva is believed to be one of the most ancient sites in the world for producing cultivated rice. Archaeological Department excavation dated the site to six to seven thousand BCE. Sohagaura represents one of the most refined manifestations of Indian civilization. An excavation suggests its antiquity 4000 to 2000 BCE. These unprotected archaeological sites are endangered with encroachment and negligence. They are at risk of disappearance due to urbanization pressures.

Architectural style of Raolas of Malwa region. The small Jageers were commonly seen in the region, ruled by members of royal families. The site was identified by MP Tourism in 2007 under Investment opportunities in MP Tourism sector and deemed suitable to be converted into a heritage hotel. However, this did not materialise. The building is currently in a dilapidated state, and seeks conservation and funding. At risk of collapse.
